medical oncology. although i haven't blogged much about it.. (because no time la! have to study all) me, chris and angela (6th year) gave our final case presentation today.. *phew* big relief! although med onc was an elective, it was quite full-on i must say.. but it was full on in a good way. i learned heaps! got bck in touch with the basics! the team is really nice.. really really nice.. and my supervisor is just so smart! first impression was: wow!!! i really liked the tutorials he gave us, cos he made us think. just like prof R :) the regs are the funniest ppl ever.. i even found out one of them attends paradise :) hehe.. and there's the rmo and intern.. really down to earth and helpful :) it changed my perception about working at the RAH, well.. a bit. haha!!
we went out for lunch with the team today... it was the rmo and intern's final week too. finally got to try east terrace continental after all the hype about it! the bruschetta was excellent! :) our reg treated us to lunch! so nice of him :)
i've always thought oncology was a good field to be in, but this rotation helped me to gain more insight into what it's really about. and it was good. it's not all doom-and-gloom. especially when i attended outpatients, i realize that people actually lead a pretty normal life despite having cancer. and with medicine being so advanced now, the treatment options available actually give these people a good survival rate.
one thing i noticed though, losing hair seems to always be the greatest concern when the subject of chemotherapy is brought up, especially with the ladies. they wouldn't ask about nausea/vomiting/diarrhoea, but their hair?! i'd have thought that i'd rather get my cancer cured, than worry about my hair.
but.. even the bible says a woman's hair is her crowning glory! then i thought to myself, i'm not even having chemo and i'm already SOOO concerned about the potential bald spot on my head -_-" geez.. humbling.
anyway, tmr will be my last day, and i have to hand in a 500 word essay before i'm officially considered done. i did 1500 in 8 hours for Dr JT the last time, i wonder how long i'll take now?
the burning question for now is...... should i bake tonight??? since they've been such nice people?
p/s: vanilla ice-cream and cornflakes make a good dessert/afternoon snack! haha, this is so random!
